- Technology Licensing Offices
Boston-Area
Harvard
University
Despite having strict conflict-of-interest policies and a reputation for
doing conservative licensing deals with establishing companies, Harvard
is increasingly willing to consider flexible deals amenable to start-ups.
The website is a great resource. Most Harvard-affiliated institutions
have independent TLOs with similar policies (see below).
Harvard Medical
School
After a restructuring in the late 90's, this TLO has the experience
and attitude to do deals with start-ups. Unlike many other offices,
may charge a few $K for a license option.
Beth
Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Very open to working with scientific founders to start companies.
The
Children's Hospital
As of 2000, still inexperienced with licensing to start-ups, though
has done so in the past.
Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute
This TLO takes a arms-length, conservative approach to dealing with
start-up. Expect short option period (~3 months).
Massachusetts
General Hospital
Though admits to not having much experience with start-ups, this TLO
has a positive outlook and is looking for the right opportunities.
Massachusetts Institute
of Technology
Without a doubt, this TLO is the most prolific and experienced office
in the country. MIT licenses many technologies to start-ups each
year. Willing to be of assistance but will not take active role
in forming company. This office has strict conflict-of-interest
policies. A phone call from the director will get you a meeting
with the most attorneys and investors. The website is a great resource.
Boston University
The Community Technology Fund is a TLO, new venture creation group, and
venture fund all rolled into one comprehensive unit. CTF takes an
extremely pro-active approach to commercializing BU discoveries, often
providing business plan writing assistance, interim management, and seed
financing to its faculty's start-ups. Can incubate start-ups in
affiliated BioSquare
and Photonics Center.
University
of Massachusetts
Well organized website does a great job of presenting technologies for
licensing.
Tufts
University
Has done at least a few deals with start-ups. Certainly actively
engages industry collaboration.
