Technium Challenge International: BPlan competition
|
| Date: |
Friday March 28, 2008 |
| Description: |
GLOBAL BUSINESS COMPETITION OFFERS ENTREPRENEURS
CHANCE TO WIN ONE YEAR’S FREE OFFICE SPACE IN UK INCUBATOR
Sony Corporation Chairman & CEO Howard Stringer To Judge Second Annual Technium Challenge International
American entrepreneurs can gain a foothold into the European market by participating in the second annual Technium Challenge International, a global business planning competition operated by Technium, a network of business incubators, and International Business Wales.
The winner of the contest will earn one year of free office space within one of 10 Technium incubators in Wales, strategic counsel on financing, business planning, technical issues, as well as valuable networking opportunities. Judges include Sony Corporation Chairman and CEO Howard Stringer, a Welshman, as well as Gordon Innes, Director of UK Trade & Investment USA, and Geraint Jones, Chief Executive, Americas, International Business Wales.
“This unique global competition offers a big boost to small businesses seeking resources to grow their business internationally,” said Geraint Jones of International Business Wales. “Wales is an ideal location for companies seeking to gain entrance into the European marketplace, due to our close proximity to London, state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, solid workforce and superior universities.”
U.S. entries must be submitted by March 28, 2008, for review by a local judging panel, where a short list of successful applicants will be selected by early April 2008. These companies will then undergo a final round of judging before the American winner is announced in late April 2008.
Wales’ International Technium Challenge is open to companies from the USA, Australia, New Zealand, China, India, Japan, Korea, South Africa and France. In late May 2008, a representative of the winners from each country, including the USA, will be flown to Wales for a week-long “Learning Journey” that will include one-on-one sessions with U.K. legal and business experts.
Finalists will receive introductions to established business networks, direct guidance on developing a U.K. market entry business plan, as well as detailed briefings about European markets. From there, they will present their business plans in front of the final Technium judging panel, which will determine one overall winner.
Detailed information about the competition including submission deadlines, terms and conditions, and background on last year’s winner is available on the Technium Challenge International website, www.technium.co.uk/challengeinternational.

WPI Venture Forum - “COOPERATION KEY TO BIOPHARMA GROWTH”
|
| Date: |
Tuesday October 9, 2007 |
| Description: |
What are the characteristics of a successful biotech startup? How can startups and established companies in the biopharmaceutical industry find ways to cooperate? On October 9, 2007, Dr. Rainer Fuchs, Vice President of Biogen Idec and Executive Director of the Biogen Idec Innovation Incubator, Bi3, will examine some of biotech¹s productivity issues and address established and novel models for cooperation between startups and established companies. According to Fuchs, compared with other high-tech industries, the biopharmaceutical industry has yet to establish a culture of "co-opetition” while retaining its reputation as a more prolific source of innovation. He will also discuss whether premoney and seed stage companies are critical to the growth and success of biotech and pharma.
The evening case presentation will be by Joe Straight, President and CEO of Synscia, Inc., a Boston-based biopharmaceutical company commercializing a novel product portfolio in ophthalmology. The company is targeting the chronic diseases of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), both of which have growing patient populations and represent a market opportunity of $10 billion.
The WPI Venture Forum meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at the Campus Center - Odeum Room, on the WPI campus in Worcester, MA.
Registration and networking begin at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Registration cost is $15 for members; and $25 nonmembers. Pre-registration is available online at http://www.wpiventureforum.org

Wednesday July 18, 2007 |
| Description: |
The Biotech Industry Study Group will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, July 18th at 6PM in the Cannon Room, Building C, HMS campus. Our invited speaker will be Dr. Sandrock, Senior Vice President of Neurology Research and Development at Biogen Idec. We invite you to attend.
The Biotech Industry Study Group (BISG) is a group designed to help graduate students and post-docs considering a career in biotech or pharma learn more about the companies and their research. The meetings will be designed to provide an overview of the company and then, by way of an invited speaker, introduce members to a prominent researcher in the company. Hopefully this will result in the members developing a sense of which company's research and culture provide the best fit and then, when the job search commences, they will already have a contact inside the company.
Alfred W Sandrock, Jr., MD, PhD is Senior Vice President, Medical Research-Neurology at Biogen Idec, Inc. in Cambridge. A board certified neurologist, he leads the team that oversees clinical development in neurologic indications. He is also assistant clinical professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, and clinical associate in neurology at MGH.
Dr. Sandrock received his MD from HMS and his PhD in neurobiology from Harvard University in Cambridge. He completed an internship in medicine, a residency and chief residency in neurology, and a clinicalfellowship in neuromuscular disease in clinical neurophysiology (electromyography) at MGH.
His contributions to the literature include articles on the identification of molecules that promote axonal regeneration, the role of neuregulin at the neuromuscular junction, as well as multiple articles on therapeutics in multiple sclerosis.

"Getting the right message to the right ears" Seminar Event
|
| Date: |
Wednesday April 25, 2007 |
| Description: |
If you choose a single person in the whole world to be on the other end of the line when the phone rings, and say, "tell me about your product or service," who would that person be? Why? When launching a new product or service, you will need to get the right people to hear your message and react. At the same time, you will have extremely limited time and limited budgets. The speaker will lead a discussion focused on how to get the message to the right people at the right time for the right results. This is will be an interactive presentation and will make use of many real-world examples, including how a small nanotechnology company with a potentially explosive product built a story that outpaced the competition, educated its audiences, and led to a full pipeline.
Speaker Bio:
Nicolas A. Boillot, President, Hart-Boillot, LLC
As co-founder of Hart-Boillot, Mr. Boillot has guided the agency to profitability in every year since it was founded in 1999. In his role as Account Director, he has managed significant communications campaigns for brands such as HP, Gore Bike Wear, EMC, Fairchild Semiconductor, Vicor and NanoHorizons. In vivo information… …from in vitro tools
|
| Date: |
Monday October 16, 2006 |
| Description: |
WatchFrog creates and markets innovative solutions for the in vivo selection of a wide range of chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic substances.
On the one hand, culture-based in vitro screening risks eliminating interesting leads while in vivo screening is considered too slow and too expensive. WatchFrog incorporates in vivo significance with early in vitro stages, accelerating drug discovery.
The new generation of WatchFrog tests “light up”, providing biological answers using fluorescent-based screening in translucent amphibian models.
Amphibian development reproduces every key event of vertebrate organogenesis within an exceedingly short time frame (72h).
This is why, for years, scientists have used the tadpole for studying the cellular basis of cancer: apoptosis, immune response, proliferation.
Similarly the model can be used to assess neurotoxic effects of potential therapeutic agents.
Now, molecular signals associated with cell division and death can be followed on-line.
Our new generation small model organisms allows these processes to be studied in a tissue specific manner using semi-robotized screening.

Alternative Funding and Business Law Panels
|
| Date: |
Tuesday April 25, 2006 |
| Description: |
Leading up to the 7th Annual Business Plan Competition, the GSAS Harvard Biotechnology Club presents the Alternative Funding and Business Law Panels.
What: Alternative Funding and Business Law Panels
When: Thursday, April 25th, 4:00 - 6:00pm
Where: Harvard Medical School New Research Building, Rotunda
Boston, MA
Alternative Funding Panel: The alternative funding panel focuses on less publicized sources of funding options for entrepreneurs. With venture capitalists preferring to invest in later stage start-up and requiring a larger percentage of ownership entreprenuers are looking elsewhere for the funds they require to get their companies off the ground. Panelists will discuss funding options available to entrepreneurs apart from venture capitalists, including SIBR grants, loans and angel investing. The format will be informal and we encourage audience members to bring questions.
Business Law Panel: New companies often start up on nothing more than the merit of a good idea. Entrepreneurs don't give much thought to how to deal with professional vendors such as bankers, attorneys, accountants and so on. With a little thought and effort, entrepreneurs can ensure to get the most from your vendor/customer/employee by building good relationship with your attorney. Your attorney's primary goal is to protect your interests. Attorneys take that job seriously, and their training gives them a different perspective than that of many entrepreneurs. In this event, entrepreneurs, scientists, and attorneys will share their perspectives on topics including: Corporation and liability, Corporate Structure, Incorporation, Disclaimers and Founders stock.
Alternative Funcing Panelists:
Janice Bourque
Senior Vice President and Group Head-Life Sciences, Comerica Bank
Dana Ono, Ph.D.
Managing Director, Life Sciences, VIMAC Ventures LLC

The life science industry has changed dramatically over the past 5 years, and the biotech venture capital industry even more so, leading to the creation of the “Capital Gap” in the funding of life science start-ups. What sort of start-ups are venture funds willing to fund today and what stage do they have to be at in order to attract funding? Which venture funds are still willing to invest in early-stage start-ups? Steve Wardell, a Principal at Apeiron Partners LLC, a boutique life science investment bank with a $100m venture fund, will address these questions and explain what his fund is currently investing in.

In this seminar series, we will feature several courageous women who were trained in biological sciences, and made many career transitions in finding and pursuing their passions, and in balancing and living their lives. They come from different culture background, went through different paths, and balanced their life in different ways. But they have one thing in common. They all have dared to venture out of their comfort zone and begin living fulfilling lives.
Jiahong Juda, PhD, Co-Founder of WEST: Moderator
Dr. Jiahong Juda is the co-founder, and recent President and CEO of Women Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (WEST). Trained as a physicist, she has always had a passion for applied science. About five years ago, she made the transition from the academic environment to a startup company, where she discovered her entrepreneurial aspiration. After searching extensively, she did not find a suitable environment for "business clueless" scientists or engineers to learn and develop intra/entrepreneurial skills until she and two colleagues co-founded WEST in 2000. Jiahong has recently retired as president of WEST, is currently working as a consultant and developing a course entitled ‘Personal Strategic Growth’ which was recently showcased at MIT.

Networking, it’s one of those topics you hear about no matter what field you’re in, even medicine and science. Most people acknowledge that networking plays a key role in building a successful career in both industry and academia.
However, just what networking is and how it can be accomplished remains a mystery for many people, especially in an industry setting. As a result, most of us do not give networking much thought until suddenly we find ourselves searching for our next (or first) career move, sitting at home with our rolodex (if we have one) and wondering “Who do I call now?”
Michele Ayan, of 180 Global Marketing, will give an interactive seminar on the “Do’s and Don’ts” of networking. Topics will include: how to get started, building and maintaining your network, as well as some advanced networking techniques.
Michele Ayan is the President and Founder of 180 Global Marketing, a marketing firm dedicated to driving the success of its clients. Ms. Ayan has over 10 years of Professional Marketing experience. Before launching her consulting practice, Michele served as the Director of Marketing of Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, LLP, a leading global law firm that serves emerging growth companies and the venture capital and private equity communities that finance them.

How Grad Students and Post Documents can Start their own Biotech Companies, Make Piles of Money and Live Happily Ever After...
OK, now that we've got your attention, we've got some bad news for you. You know that great discovery you've been working on for years in the lab, the one that you're going to build your start-up around -- it's not yours. Don't worry, it's probably doesn't belong to anyone else in the lab either. It almost certainly belongs to your dear Alma Mater.
But the bad news isn't as bad as it seems. Truth is, for Harvard to succeed, she needs you to succeed. We'll offer you the inside knowledge you'll need to make your fortune and to get your piece of the action after slaving away all these years. All legal, fair and square -- and all without getting your Mother mad at you (or us). What more could you ask from a one hour talk???
See you there - and be ready to sign on the dotted line!

423 Essential Pieces of Patent & Business Information for Biotech Start-ups (time permitting)
|
| Date: |
Wednesday September 25, 2002 |
| Description: |
Thomas M. Saunders
(Brown, Rudnick, Berlack & Israels, LLP)
Converting cutting edge science into a business requires the obligatory growth factor called money. Surprisingly, securing money does not depend heavily on the underlying science. Scientific entrepreneurs and BigPharma alike pursue only sound leads. Nevertheless, most new drugs, techniques, devices, and platforms fail. Your ideas face these same odds. While Brownian motion determines which ideas ultimately succeed, the physiology of business determines which are granted funding to potentially succeed.
This presentation will address:
-Patents, when you need them, what they cost, and how to fake it.
-Hints on prostituting yourself to venture capital.
-Why you can’t transfer science credits to the business world.
-Amusing mistakes you are likely to make.

Company Spotlight: Sequenom-The Renaissance of Genetics
|
| Date: |
Monday September 9, 2002 |
| Description: |
Join us for a presentation from Sequenom, a leader in genotyping analysis. Three sessions will be offered covering their technology platform:
Accurate and High-Throughput Genotyping: The MassARRAY Technology
(30 minutes)
The MassARRAY system combines proprietary enzymatic reactions, a miniaturized SpectroCHIP, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and highly sophisticated bioinformatics software. Each of these components contributes to unparalleled performance in speed, accuracy, and cost.
Implementation of Discovery Genetics: Targeted SNP Discovery (30 minutes)
SNP Discovery is a new application for our high-throughput MassARRAY system. It is based on our MassCLEAVE technology, which generates sequence specific cleavage patterns from PCR amplicons. This allows for the detection of new polymorphic sites as well as bacterial or pathogen-typing, methylation pattern analysis and sequence verification for molecular diagnostics.
Growth, Innovation, Discovery: Sample Pooling (30 minutes)
SEQUENOM's internal genomics projects are fueled by a sample pooling technique called allelotyping, which has resulted in numerous SNP discoveries and publications. This technique confirms the presence of a SNP and its allelic frequency in a population using the MassARRAY system. With this technology, we will demonstrate the ability to analyze DNA pools of hundreds of individuals in a single reaction, allowing you to rapidly pre-evaluate SNPs, screen patient populations and significantly reduce your total workload for individual genotyping.
Presenters include:
Charles Cantor, Ph.D.
Chief Scientific Officer
Dirk van den Boom, Ph.D.
Director of Molecular Biology
Betsy Nanthakumar, M.Sc.
Associate Director of Automated Systems

Company Spotlight: US Genomics
|
| Date: |
Tuesday May 23, 2000 |
| Description: |
U.S. Genomics (USG) is pioneering breakthrough technologies for direct, linear analysis of DNA for the global life sciences industry. Modeled after the cellular machinery used to read genetic material, the Company’s technologies have the potential to transform the commercial utility of genomic information by enhancing its quality and breadth of application. USG is focused initially on providing technology products and services to markets in drug discovery, pharmacogenomics, and diagnostics.
To address the emerging commercial need for the rapid production of usable and comprehensive genomic data, USG has created a fundamental new technology platform that allows direct, linear DNA analysis. Modeled after the natural method of reading genetic material during cell division, the Company’s technology platform greatly expands the read lengths for which DNA can be analyzed. USG’s technology theoretically has no upper limit on the length of DNA that can be read, a characteristic that offers the potential of transforming the utility and commercial application of genomic analysis.
Core Technologies
* GeneEngine™ Detection Technology – Complete hardware system to execute USG’s direct, linear readings of DNA. The system is designed to use the software of the DNA Delivery Mechanismä .
* DNA Delivery Mechanismä – Nanotechnology system for allowing DNA to be read linearly. The product includes software tailored to specific applications
* Genomics Database – A genomics and biological knowledge-based product that will serve as a resource for storing and mining valuable information
* Bioinformatics – Computational tools and software for the integration, analysis and management of genomic and biological information from internal and external data sources.

"Getting the right message to the right ears" seminar event
|
| Date: |
Saturday April 25, 1998 |
He has also worked in higher education as a teacher and in finance, where he analyzed European businesses for a group of American investors who sought acquisitions.
Registration is NOT required for this event! To help us out with expected numbers though, please let us know by signing up via this survey (it'll take 5 seconds!).
